Hoffman's, Who we are
A NEW TWIST ON OLD FASHIONED FAMILY SERVICE
Family commitment to excellence is the true success story behind Hoffman’s
Bakery Cafe
June and Ed Hoffman, longtime Santa Cruz residents, returned to Santa Cruz in
2000 to set up an exciting new bakery cafe with a full service dining room
serving breakfast, lunchand dinner, breads, tortes and pastries, many of
which are French inspired.
Both June and Ed are UCSC graduates, as is their son Adam, the dining room manager. Ed started his baking career over 25 years
ago in downtown Santa Cruz at the Old Theatre Cafe, where he was an
apprentice baker under the tutelage of Lorenz Rothbucher. He also worked with
Ron Schmidt, Al Negri, and Jean Wopplehorst, all former owners of bakeries in
downtown Santa Cruz.
It was a "natural" for Ed to think of moving to downtown
Santa Cruz when he sold his shop in Kirkland, Washington, where the Hoffmans
enjoyed 16 years of great success, providing award-winning cakes and pastries
and exceptional wedding cakes.
All three Hoffman children work in the
business in one capacity or another. Marie has attended both UC Santa
Barbara and the French Culinary Institute in New York City and has earned her
wine professional's certification from the Culinary Institute of America. She hopes to become a sommelier. She creates many of Hoffman's signature
desserts and wedding cakes, and is the bakery manager and marketing director. Adam's degree from UCSC
is in Business Management Economics and he runs the dining room. Michelle
recently finished high school and helps with marketing, office work and
bussing tables.
Ed supervises the bakery and June is the bookkeeper, and she
oversees all aspects of the business. She also serves on the Board of
Directors of the Downtown Association and the Downtown Commission. The
Hoffmans bring to downtown Santa Cruz a lifetime of commitment to the bakery
business and real old-fashioned family style service.
